A Patriot Act A Brent Marks Legal Thriller Volume 2 Kenneth Eade 9781500284992 Books
This is the first book I've read by Kenneth Eade.I am a retired First Sergeant from the US Army. I served during both Operation Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom. After my retirement from active duty I continued to work for the Department of the Army for over 12 years, retiring on 30 May 2015.At the time of my Retirement I was earning six figures in salary but I knew, deep in my heart, money was meaningless to me. I could not continue to support policies that were wrong.
Kenneth takes on the hard issues and does a suberb job. If there is anyone out there that thinks this is a work of fiction, think again. Our government let us down and Kenneth brings it to the forefront. If you doubt my patriotism look at the medals on my chest.
Mr. Eade, keep writing, keep fighting, keep teaching. America is so much more than what President Bush, Dick Cheney, and Donald Rumsfeld would have us believe.
This book has a big set of cojones!!!

... for the author's use of spot on quotes. Wish I had thought to mark them in some way for future reference.
The book deserves 5 stars for making me look at Guantanamo, et al, differently than I had before I read it. I gave it 4 because the character of Catherine is not well fleshed out. She's the plaintiff in the lawsuit but we barely know her at the end of the story.
Saying this book is thought provoking is an understatement. It presents an unpopular point of view in a very persuasive way.
Read it and you'll probably watch the news differently.
Starting with a quote from one of my favorite bands, Bread, I love it already.
In fact, the entire book is filled with quotations that make us remember what our country honestly stands for. These quotes, learned so long ago, bring our hearts back to what we stand for - with hope in our souls.
As another aside, once I find a good series, I write my reviews as I read so my thoughts are fresh.
I wonder why more books don't do what is done a great many times in real life stipulate to the credentials of an expert witness. My eyeballs cross.
If the man who is the subject of this book is just a suspected money launderer, why was he in Camp 7? I sure wish that question was asked!
After finishing the book and the follow up, I have to say I am ashamed. I will not say anything further.
This is truly a legal thriller. Almost all the action is in the courtroom, which is where I believe a legal thriller belongs. If if mostly investigation of a crime, with little court time, that's a crime thriller. And so forth.
This is an excellent book, well researched and well written. As I now realize this is a series, I must say it is tightly written, characters developing over time, and containing material that will be relevant for some time to come. I love reading courtroom thrillers written by a lawyer, because they usually get it right. The courtroom part, I mean. Here I didn't see (much) poetic license being used.
There is one character that I want to know what happened to. Actually, all the military involved. What happened? Easy. Nothing.
Intense, not a topic worn out by a hundred, lesser books, and the courtroom drama is real. Characters you can identify with. Love it.
The book itself is a great read; a fast-paced page-turner that keeps the reader engaged until they realize it is 500 a.m. -- and time has slipped away.
This is a book about the abrogation of the constitutional rights of a naturalized American citizen who is rolled-up in terror-sweep while visiting his brother -- a suspected terrorist collaborator -- in a foreign country. A fictitious tale about government misdeeds, including enhanced interrogation, under the Patriot Act that are allegedly and believably true -- and as seen through the eyes of a lawyer. Mixed with the hoary observations about George Bush and his Administration.
The tone for this book as written by the author can be set in three quotes ...
"George W. Bush is wiping his ass with the Constitution."
"... it was foreseeable that the 'military conflict' there could go on for decades, to the delight of military contractors like Halliburton, Lockheed and General Dynamics. War is good for business."
“What we see in this case is an abuse of power by an over-zealous president, and that abuse of power must be stopped."
While it has nothing to do with the book, it should be noted that the current President, Barrack Hussein Obama, has not only kept to the Bush path, but expanded it to suit his own needs. And this very scenario can be played out -- and might be playing out -- to this very day.
In my opinion, there are four shortcomings in this book -- none of which diminish my enthusiastic recommendation of this good read. .
1. M.P.s (Military Police) are not tasked with chasing down or rolling-up terror suspect.
2. The willingness of an FBI agent to convey classified information to a civilian, even if he is a former FBI agent.
3. The casual way that the principal character allows his secretary to be spoken of in a disrespectful manner.
4. The principal character's lost opportunity to argue that it is next to impossible to try any terror suspect in either a military tribunal or a federal court due to the lack of actual witnesses and evidence. And, by classifying almost everything connected with the suspect, it is next to impossible to determine the truth or falsity of that individual's actions.
