In the past I've stayed away from novellas because I tend to like stories that I can really sink my teeth into, with time for proper plot development, character growth, and relatable struggles. Unfortunately this one did nothing to change my general rule. The plot was one-dimensional, the characters were boring and unrealistic, and relatable struggles were not on the radar. I did not enjoy reading this, even brief as it was, and takes the author down a notch in my estimation. The heroine, Isabelle, has lived an isolated life, tucked away at the lighthouse which her father maintains. When remnants of a wrecked ship wash ashore their rocky beach, Isabelle and her father try to save the life of the lone survivor, who turns out to be a wealthy, spoiled flirt. Everything predictable follows, except there's a random medical malady broadly hinted at, until it is finally confessed and proves, of course, to be no obstacle in the end.
Although I usually quite enjoy Jody Hedlund's stories and have in fact been reading more of her works since finishing this one, "Out of the Storm" has already been deleted off my Kindle with no regrets. I hope my next review might be more favorable!

Out of the Storm Beacons of Hope A Novella edition by Jody Hedlund Religion Spirituality eBooks Reviews
In this novella the author introduces the role of lighthouse keepers along the Great Lakes, Lake Huron in particular. A widowed man and his daughter are alone on a distant isle on the eastern coast of Michigan's lower peninsula. Lake Huron storms are harsh and have battered many ships through the years. This story develops around a seriously injured lone survivor of a shipwreck and his attraction to the lightkeeper's daughter.
Jody Hedlund has done an outstanding job of creating the pace for a new series of books surrounding lighthouses around the state of Michigan. Her research is impeccable, and the romantic involvement in this short book is tangible. Certainly there is no room for in-depth development; however, considering the brevity of this novella the author has piqued my interest in her newest series. Jody is known for creating well developed characters and a spine tingling story of danger and romance. A very strong theme recurring through this story is hope. I highly recommend this free novella as an introduction to further books in this series.

This was a wonderful novella to start of the series. Like all of her stories, Jody does a wonderful job of dropping the reader into the world of the character.
The novella starts out with a ship wreck, and the tragedy pulled me in from the first moment. I wanted to know what happened and if anyone would survive. The one survivor becomes a main character with a charming personality.
Isabelle is someone I wish I could know in real life. She is so great about soaking up all life gives her, but she feels like she is missing out on something.
Overall, I really enjoyed this novella. It had a number of surprising revelations and there was a tension that coursed through it pushing the story forward. Like most novellas, it was a quick read.
Presque Isle Lighthouse, Michigan, 1854
"'Everyone's dead.'
Isabelle Thornton shuddered at her father's words......Flotsam littered the beach around them, the remains of a steamer that had been ripped apart by the thrashing squall" (Chapter 1, page 2).
The novella introduces us to the Beacons of Hope series.
From the opening paragraph to the closing chapter, Jody Hedlund captured the harsh reality of living on the shores of the Great Lakes in Michigan. The dangers, both natural and human, are woven into the story allowing the reader to gain a glimpse into the life of an 1850's lighthouse keeper.
Overall, I enjoyed the novella's setting, characters, and plot. I was disappointed in the few romantic scenes that did not seem as believable as the rest of the story.

I look forward to reading more about the life and times of the Great Lakes' lighthouse keepers and their families in the series first book Love Unexpected in December 2014.
A vivid and emotional novella, Out of the Storm by Jody Hedlund has me excited for the other books of this series!
A lone survivor of a shipwreck. A girl with a paralyzing secret. A lighthouse. And an over-protective father.
I had fun reading this short story. The aspect of the secret was an interesting part for sure. I loved the theme of learning to live and laugh, -) Beautiful all in all.
There were some "steamy" romance moments, which definitely isn't my favorite way to read a love story (I don't prefer when so much emphasis is on physical attraction and the like). My biggest problem would be how far they went with that attraction without the covenant of marriage. Definitely not the safest thing to do. You can understand more with the characters' backgrounds, but still... I would say older teens to adults as for audience. That definitely knocked some from my rating
Intriguing, touching tale in the end.
