The things that made the first book in this series different and interesting were merely second-verse-same-as-the-first in this book. However it's difficult to criticize historical fiction based on true events, since it's not a fault in the author's imagination, these were really things that happened at different points to her family. So, you know, I try to cut the book some slack.

Likes: I still love dear little May and her precocious and funny voice. I read some of this to my son and found some good opportunities to explain to him how a long time ago women weren't allowed to have jobs sometimes or get an education and could only have babies. May's mother had to go along with what the father wanted even if it wasn't what she wanted, and I'm really thankful that there's been a general cultural shift away from that kind of thinking. I'm sure there's a lot of women who still feel like they are oppressed in their opportunities, but I think there's a lot of women now who can make choices about their own life.

Dislikes: I felt there were a lot of missed opportunities for development of characters here. Since the plot was mostly just the daily life of this family, there could have been more attention paid to each character. There was a lot of characters being acted on without then showing their reaction in a meaningful way. In the first book when May's sister dies, there was a lot of description of the fall out from that. Each thing that happens here is only briefly dealt with.

Overall I'm glad I read this next book and would read the heck out of a book about May coming of age and becoming a young woman.

This as book reminded me of myself and my family !!I'm a country girl!!!!! I count my pigs as my family "and as my babies" I love you piggies, Dutch,Chexxie,Marbles,Trixie,Charlie,Red,Ms.Piggy,Speckles,Bits,Brutte,Pickles,and Sassy. She sat on the feeder and wouldn't let them eat!!! Hahahaha I love this girl)

I thought this book was great. once I started I could not stop. A good read definitely. If you are looking for a book this is a wonderful choice.
I wanted to like this book and thought I would since I like others by Jennifer Holm, but I could not get past the men's negative attitudes toward women, in general, and toward May Amelia, in particular. Her father says she's stupid and believes all girls are useless. He claims she doesn't need to learn anything other than how to change diapers and her teacher says that schooling is wasted on her since she'll just have babies someday. Of course, her pappa changes his mind about May Amelia near the end of the story after she proves herself, but I'm so sick of his behavior by then that I no longer care. Far from redeeming himself, I just want him to go fall into a hole he can't possibly get out of.
I was a little leery of a sequel to "Our Only May Amelia" - but this book continues right on with wonderful believable characters and the realities and hardships of life at the turn of the century. This is "children's" writing at its very best. May Amelia is a person you will root for and empathize with as she struggles to be accepted as a valuable part of her family. Not to mention, the book is laugh aloud funny! Excellent reading for adults too!
My 9 year old daughter has really enjoyed Jennifer L Holm's May Amelia stories and Boston Jane. She likes that May Amelia is independent and sometimes funny. I think the books are well written.
this book had me crying at parts, along with the first one. its heartbreaking and endearing, full of a life that nobody really realizes. i love these books and for those you gave it a four stars or less, you should be ashamed. i love this book, ans am upset they arn't a full series. please write more of may amelia! we love her! and of course her brothers too.
There are quite a few things that I really enjoyed about this book. I enjoyed May Amelia's voice, she comes shining through loud and clear. Within the first chapter I had a pretty good idea of May Amelia's personality, feisty and impetuous, which it was not hard to imagine could be pretty irritating to her family, especially her father who did not know what to do with her. She wasn't like any of the other women that he knew. After reading the first book (Our Only May Amelia) its clear that May Amelia's father grew up in an affection-poor home, and he struggles to show any affection. Plus, homesteading was a brutally hard way of life. The vignettes that Holm shares provide glimpses into some of the challenges that these pioneers faced outside of the routine of everyday farm work.

I was able to visualize the setting easily. I'm always amazed when an author is able to convey such a strong sense of place with relatively few descriptions. I did notice when I went back and read Our Only May Amelia that that book had a lot more descriptions of the various settings, which makes sense since she was introducing the place for the first time. Holm gives the reader an immediate sense of both the beauty of the area and the challenges that come with geographic isolation.

The biggest problem I had was the cover, I mean the girl looks like she's 16 or 17 not 12 and a pink bra strap?! Seriously? Other than that I just had a couple of minor issues with the lack of quotation marks and the number of capital letters used in the text. Once I got used to it however, it was fine. In fact, as I read the Capitals helped to show emotion and emphasis, which I am assuming is the intent.

Overall, a great book for discussion or just for plain enjoyment (not for teaching grammar )) Highly recommended for those who enjoy genuine historical fiction with a strong female main character who inadvertently gets in trouble on a regular basis.
